The Hawaiian shirt, also known as the Aloha shirt, is a hugely popular button-down design, originating in, you guessed it, Hawaii. Modern-day Aloha shirts typically feature a straight collar, short sleeves, and lightweight fabric. They are traditionally worn untucked.
Though the exact origins of the Hawaiian shirt are unclear, it is thought by many that they originated in the 1920s or ‘30s in a Hawaiian dry goods store, where a seamstress began making shirts from Japanese kimono fabric. Upon being embraced by both locals and tourists, the design became a hit worldwide and is still trending, even in 2021. Hawaiian shirts are also a popular feature at many ‘bad’ or ‘shit’ shirt nights thanks to their bright design and bold patterning.
